AI can create a new ‘super cycle’ for Apple
The huge number of users is considered an advantage for Apple when it releases iOS 18 with a set of AI features this fall.
In the Power On newsletter on Bloomberg, reporter Mark Gurman said that artificial intelligence (AI)-based features on iOS 18 and other platforms will be released as tests (“beta” or “preview”). .
This sign shows that the AI feature set on iOS 18 is not complete enough for an official launch. Although Apple is considered to be lagging behind in the AI race, releasing cautious features is considered reasonable, especially after the “disaster” of AI Overview on Google Search not long ago.
Although released slower than competitors, Gurman believes that Apple’s biggest advantage is its large user base.
“There will be hundreds of millions of Apple devices in the world that can support AI features by the end of this year. Their owners will at least experience the new feature. That could turn Apple into an AI company. biggest overnight,” Bloomberg’s writer emphasized.
According to Gurman, Apple plans to apply a mixed approach when some AI tasks will work directly on the device, while the rest will be sent to a cloud server equipped with an M2 Ultra chip for processing.
The machine’s algorithm determines its ability to process requests on the device or the Internet. However, the AI processing mode on the device may only work on new devices, such as the most recent 1-2 generations of iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple is said to be developing a special mini model for the Apple Watch.
The AI features are developed internally under the name Project Greymatter. Gurman lists some possible AI features including summarizing messages and notifications, converting audio recordings to text, editing photos, and suggesting responses to messages and emails.
AI on iOS 18 also helps improve search features on Safari, increase result quality and search time in Spotlight, in addition to some improvements to Siri, especially the Apple Watch assistant version.
One feature highlighted by Gurman is creating emojis through a generative AI model.
“The company is developing software that can quickly create customized emojis, based on what users are typing. That means you will instantly have completely new emojis for every occasion, in addition to the options available. available that Apple provides on iPhone and other devices,” Gurman emphasized.
According to Gurman, Apple needs to complete each feature well, but still must ensure privacy because sending data to the cloud goes against the policy of processing all data on the device, which Apple has aimed for for many years.
“Apple can also leverage the security features of the M-series chip for cloud processing tasks. This may not be enough to convince privacy-minded people, but I suspect most customers will not interested,” the Bloomberg writer added.
Next, iOS 18 can integrate chatbots based on OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Gurman even predicted CEO Sam Altman would appear at WWDC to announce a partnership with Apple. The option to cooperate with Google for the Gemini model is also on the table.
